Can we believe it’s already Labor Day weekend and time to head back to school?! Here are some tips for school and home to help the school year start off great!

• Get enough sleep. Many kids do not get enough sleep for the demands of a full day of school. Limit electronic use and stop use completely at least 1 hour before bed. Try quiet play or reading instead.

• Limit backpack weight to 10-15% of body weight for better posture and decreased strain on the child’s body.

• Teach kids their parent’s phone number(s) and home address.

• Teach kids to put their shoes on the correct feet and Velcro or tie their shoes on their own. This helps the teachers, especially after recess or during gym. Also zippers as the weather gets cooler.

• Keep the small, broken crayons. A little trick for facilitating a good pencil grasp.

• Use a folder to organize assignments/permission slips/events at home and have designated supplies for homework.

• Have your child help pick clothes and pack supplies the night before.

Most importantly, remember every child learns and develops differently!

Encourage your child(ren) and remind them often of their many strengths. Talk about their day during supper or before bed. And give yourself grace in the occasional struggles.
